“
For the People, by the People
”
Communication is the strong point of government. We
need to refocus on the fact that government is for the people
and by the people, not a separate entity. I want to see the
trust and cooperation between the people and county
government brought back. Commission meetings should be more
accommodating to the citizens by allowing for public comment
both at the beginning and end of each meeting. We should also
consider returning to weekly meetings with an alternative
time for overflow agenda, if needed –– such as the following
morning. I intend to devote my full time to being a Pasco
County Commissioner.
I
want to hear from you, the people of Pasco! During my campaign, my
website, www.voteWilNickerson.com
, will have various means
of communicating your concerns, I have no other outside interests
and can devote my full time to being Commissioner. When elected, I
will continue to maintain an active website and e-mail for the
people to communicate through as well as the more standard lines of
communication. I will maintain regular office hours to allow an
opportunity for all citizens concerns to be
heard.
The economic climate of Pasco County is a
big issue for all residents. I intend to be a watchdog over waste,
excessive and frivolous spending. But even in a time of crisis
such as now - with skyrocketing insurance and property tax
disparities - there still needs to be careful consideration before
cutting budgets for needed services of the citizens. We must
re-double our efforts to grow the tax base by something other than
residential development. Under the current system, each time the
County ok’s a new subdivision, it costs the citizenry more to
provide the necessary infrastructure, while the out of town
developers move on with their profits. And while the developers
have a right to develop and make money, it should not be done by
getting numerous variances from the land development code which is
in place to protect the general interests of all of the citizens of
the county. We need to start thinking outside the box and come up
with better ways of boosting our economy and best utilizing our
resources. These are trying times, doing things the same old way
may have been alright in the past, but now we need change and
vision to preserve our way of life as we know it.
Through efforts of many Floridians,
myself being one, we have made large strides in controlling the
insurance issue, but only for some and at the cost of higher risk
for the policy holder. Through my own, and other residents efforts,
the County set several things in motion to help with the insurance
issue last year. More needs to be done and I am one who will fight
for insurance reform for the people, condo owners and businesses.
Property taxes are another of the big concerns of our people. There
needs to be a tax system which is fair in all respects, for all of
the people and businesses, with no loopholes and or other special
considerations given –– equality across the
board.
Education and public safety are our
largest budget issues. Our children deserve and should get the best
in education from a unified early learning program through college.
This can be accomplished more efficiently by combining the sites of
schools, public parks and libraries, with cost effective
multi-purpose, greener buildings. Why build a school with a limited
library and build a public library when both could be housed in the
same location with ease of access for students and the public. Cost
savings such as these could supply students with the books and
supplies they so sorely lack. Police, Fire and elder care need to
be available at all costs. In-depth and impartial looks into waste,
frivolous spending and streamlining of services in all departments
is crucial in times such as these.
A large order you say! Only change will
